Andrii Portnov, Dnipro: An Entangled History of a European City, Academic Studies Press, Boston 2022

This first English-language synthesis of the history of Dnipro (until 2016 Dnipropetrovsk, until 1926 Katerynoslav) locates the city in a broader regional, national, and transnational context and explores the interaction between global processes and everyday routines of urban life. The history of a place (throughout its history called ‘new Athens’, ‘Ukrainian Manchester’, ‘the Brezhnev`s capital’ and ‘the heart of Ukraine’) is seen through the prism of key threads in the modern history of Europe: the imperial colonization and industrialization, the war and the revolution in the borderlands, the everyday life and mythology of a Soviet closed city, and the transformations of post-Soviet Ukraine. Designed as a critical entangled history of the multicultural space, the book looks for a new analytical language to overcome the traps of both national and imperial history-writing.

W 1918 roku odzyskującą swoje miejsce na mapie niepodległą Polskę oddzieliła od Niemiec granica, przebiegająca przez ziemie dotychczasowego zaboru pruskiego. W tej postaci granica przetrwała do wybuchu II wojny światowej. Niemieccy i polscy autorzy podróżowali w 2018 roku wzdłuż granicy dokonując przy tym zadziwiających odkryć.

Zwischen 1918 und 1939 waren Deutschland und Polen durch eine Grenze getrennt, die heute fast vollständig in Vergessenheit geraten ist. Autorinnen und Autoren aus beiden Ländern haben sich jetzt auf den Weg gemacht, um nach den Spuren der einst fast 2000 Kilometer langen Grenzlinie in der Landschaft und im kollektiven Gedächtnis zu suchen.

Entstanden ist ein Band mit vielen überraschenden Erkenntnissen zur deutsch-polnischen Geschichte, der den Leser auch zu eigenen Entdeckungsreisen einlädt.

Katharina Kinga Kowalski, Feminismus als Denkstil. Zur Frauen- und Geschlechterforschung im Polen der Transformationszeit

Der polnische Feminismus der Transformationszeit blickt auf eine bereits 40-jährige Geschichte zurück und prägt bis heute international relevante soziale, politische und wissenschaftliche Praktiken und Diskurse. Die vorliegende Studie geht den feinen Entwicklungslinien zentraler feministischer Denkstilelemente nach und rekonstruiert Motive und Interventionen des feministischen Denkkollektivs seit den 1980er Jahren bis zum EU-Beitritt Polens. Dabei stützt sie sich auf eine breite Quellengrundlage aus öffentlichen und privaten Archiven sowie auf Interviews mit Schlüsselfiguren des Feminismus und nutzt das theoretische Instrumentarium von Ludwik Fleck. Aufgezeigt werden neue Perspektiven auf das „Machen von Wissenschaft“ auch im transnationalen Kontext sowie feministische (Dis-)Kontinuitäten in der Volksrepublik Polen.

Katarzyna Person, Jüdische DPs aus Polen in der amerikanischen und der britischen Besatzungszone Deutschlands, 1945–1948. Aus dem Polnischen von Anna Labentz

Das vorliegende Buch beschreibt das Schicksal polnischer Juden im besetzten Deutschland der Jahre 1945–1948. Untersucht wird vor allem ihr Verhältnis zu den einheimischen Deutschen, den Besatzungs­mächten, den polnischen DPs sowie den Vertretern von Hilfs­orga­nisationen in den DP-Lagern. Es ergibt sich das Bild einer Gemeinschaft, die ihre Wurzeln in der jüdischen Bevölkerung im Polen der Vorkriegs­zeit hat. Zugleich verkörpern diese Menschen eine neue Identität: die der Scher’it Hapleitah – der Überlebenden der Shoah. Aus den „polni­­schen Juden“ wurden in den Nachkriegsjahren Juden aus Polen, und schließ­­lich schlichtweg Juden, die ihr Leben außerhalb ihres Herkunfts­landes aufbauen wollten. Die Erfahrung der Shoah und der Glaube an eine Zukunft in Palästina hielten diese Gemeinschaft zu­sammen.

The political upheaval in Central and Eastern Europe more than 30 years ago led to an epochal shift that has come to be called the post-socialist or post-communist transformation. It involved very substantial social, political and economic changes. This volume focuses on two examples of that systemic transformation, namely the cases of Poland and the former East Germany. The emphasis is on the historical preconditions, the course and the results of the transformation process in particular fields, including foreign trade, entrepreneurship, and scientific systems. Taken as a whole, the fifteen individual studies contained in the volume will contribute to the comparative study of the transformation in these two countries.

Magdalena Kamińska, Platte ist nicht gleich Platte. Kooperation und Konkurrenz zwischen der DDR und Polen im Wohnungsbauwesen der 1970er Jahre, Wiesbaden 2022

This study examines the cooperation between two former socialist sister states, the German Democratic Republic (GDR or East Germany) and the Polish People's Republic, in the field of industrialised housing construction in the 1970s. Using the East German housing series WBS 70 and the Polish W-70 (“Warszawa 1970”) as examples, both successful and unsuccessful aspects of this partnership are highlighted. Structures, contacts as well as the scope for action are analysed from the institutional to the individual level. Did both sides influence each other? What role did Western societies play? These and other key questions are answered in a way that avoids stereotypical notions of hierarchical decision-making processes in socialist states. This balanced analysis rather tells the story of the pan-European transfer of ideas and knowledge in post-war modernism.

Frank Grelka und Stephan Rindlisbacher (eds.), „Our Work with the Masses Is Not Worth a Kopeck“. A Document Collection on German and Polish Rural Soviets in Ukraine during the NEP, 1923–1929, Wiesbaden 2021

The era of the New Economic Policy (NEP) was the golden age of Soviet affirmative national policies. This volume of documents offers insights into Polish and German minority institutions and political practices in early Soviet Ukraine. It provides a picture of how people in rural areas received the affirmative initiatives from above and adapted them for their own purposes. Even though these policies failed to achieve the goals the Bolsheviks expected, they granted a large degree of autonomy on a local scale that was unmatched in previous and later times. The Polish village of Hreczany near Proskuriv (today Khmel’nyts’kyi) in western Ukraine, and the German Karl-Liebknecht Raion in southern Ukraine serve as prime examples in this document collection.

Markus Pieper, Parteiauftrag: Städtepartnerschaft. Kommunalpartnerschaften zwischen Polen und der DDR und ihre Transformation nach 1989, Berlin 2020

Am Beispiel der seit 1959 bestehenden Städtepartnerschaft Dresden–Breslau (Wrocław) wird die Geschichte der kommunalen Zusammenarbeit zwischen der DDR und der Volksrepublik Polen anschaulich und umfassend dargestellt. Trotz aller Ideologisierung und Instrumentalisierung öffneten die sozialistischen Partnerschaften immer auch Räume für persönliche Kontakte zwischen Deutschen und Polen – vor allem in Zeiten geschlossener Grenzen. Ein Ausblick auf die Jahre seit der Systemtransformation zeigt Kontinuitäten und Brüche der Partnerschaften.

Das Buch enthält eine umfangreiche Zusammenfassung in polnischer Sprache (S. 455–495).

Mit dem Titel »Was sind Polenstudien?« knüpft die IPS-Schriftenreihe an die Frage »Was sind Kulturwissenschaften?« an, die im Jahre 2004 Heinz Dieter Kittsteiner seinen Fakultätskollegen stellte. Im vorliegenden Band suchen dreizehn Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden der Europa-Universität Viadrina Antworten auf die Fragen nach den Zielen und Methoden der gegenwärtigen Polenforschung und ordnen die eigenen Promotionsprojekte in die aufgezeigten Tendenzen ein.

After the collapse of the great empires at the end of World War I, the reorganization of East Central Europe along the lines of nation-states was by no means a foregone conclusion. There was no way to predict which country would survive in a national or imperial form. In seven case studies on countries between the Baltic and the Adriatic Seas, this conference volume discusses the influence of local actors on legal, political and military reorganizations. New research approaches highlight the effects of Eastern European experiences on post-World War I international history far from diplomacy at Versailles.

Due to the eastern enlargement of the EU and the free movement of workers between East Central Europe and Germany since 2011, the participation of these countries in cross-border investments has significantly grown in the EU. The Institute for Central and East European Taxation (I CEE Tax) shows with these conference proceedings that the need for expert knowledge in tax, social security and labor law of these countries has considerably increased. The articles collected in this volume contribute to the intensive transfer of knowledge between business and academic research.

The publication entitled Freedom of Movement for Workers between Germany and Poland is the outcome of an international and interdisciplinary conference: “Freedom of Movement for Workers between Poland and Germany – taking stock after 1.5 years”, which took place on October 11, 2012 at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) in cooperation with the Willy Brandt Centre, University of Wroclaw. The focus of this volume lies in the range of the legal basis for the freedom of movement for workers, the labour and tax law, as well as in cultural aspects of movement between these two countries. The interaction of the academic areas of economics, law studies, and humanities is a novelty in Polish Studies, which are traditionally based in the humanities only, particularly in linguistics, language Studies, and History. The close linkage of the respective expertise in the fields and the combination of academic excellence with precisely defined practical questions characterize the unique position of this first volume in the publication series Polish Studies Interdisciplinary.
